The Business March 2008: Work on the move – myth or reality?
For years, technology companies have been promising to provide solutions that would enable workers that are ‘on the road’ to work as if they’re in the office. Handheld devices can do more than ever. Although most people with a handheld mobile device seem to only use it for sending and receiving e-mails.
Unless you work in a specific industry that has a need for instant electronic feedback from mobile workers, such as couriers, so far, the benefits have not justified the costs? Is that changing with the introduction of mobile broadband? Having a simple USB device providing broadband access over the mobile telephone network would allow mobile workers to carry their laptops and connect to company networks as if they were in the office. Is this what everyone has been waiting for?
