The Business February 2008: Data – keep it safe!
We often discuss data security with our clients. The recent high profile mishaps have raised awareness of this issue.
So how do you get it right and avoid your client’s data being misused?
Firstly, it is important to remember that the Data Protection Act applies to personal data: where a business handles personal data there needs to be some clear planning about managing this data. The ICO outlines eight principles: personal data should be;
· Fairly and lawfully processed
· Processed for limited purposes
· Adequate, relevant and not excessive
· Accurate and up to date
· Not kept for longer than is necessary
· Processed in line with the person’s rights
· Secure
· Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection
